Chris' Corner -- Sunday, November 1, 2020
When the election is over and the ballots have been counted, there will be winners and losers. Some folks will be glad, others sad. For the Christian, no matter the outcome, we know who has been in charge all along. No need to be upset. No need to fuss and fume. No need to worry or be fearful.
Long ago Daniel told the great King Nebuchadnezzar how God “...changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding” (Daniel 2:21).
The prophet went on to say, “...In order that the living may know That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men” (Daniel 4:17). And again, “...the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses” (4:32).
This should give us great comfort during the chaos and uncertainty going on these days in the political process in our country and around the world. If God can control the outcomes of the greatest empires the world has ever known (Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome), then surely He can oversee the affairs of the United States, China, and Russia today.
The times in which we live must be seen through the eye of faith. When we think of the events of the past, we lived through them. Humanity survived. God didn’t let us down then. He won’t let us down now. There have been times when things weren’t always as we thought they would be, but here we are to live another day. God is good.
We need to remember all those answered prayers of the past. Sometimes the almighty answered them just as we asked in every detail. How thankful we ought to be. At other times, He answered, but it was different than we thought. We know He heard all our prayers. Rest assured He always answers the requests of His faithful children. And here we are to live another day. God is good.
We live in a world of sin and selfishness. Our nation is full of men and women in high places who have become consumed with themselves and the desire to wield great power over others. They have grown accustomed to wealth, and greed shapes much of what they do. This will effect our nation as a whole. From Bible history we can recall how God sometimes allowed tragic circumstances to fall upon sinful, proud nations to teach them valuable lessons. “Put them in fear, O Lord, That the nations may know themselves to be but men” (Psalm 9:20). “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
During troubling times, God still watches over His children. They may suffer from the general punishment given to the nations, but God never forgets His own. He watches over them and blesses them. Eventually, He lifts them up and they live to see better days. God is good.
Regardless of the outcome in the affairs of men, Christians will live to see another day. If not in this life, in the day that never ends. God is so good!
